Formed in 1985 in Erfurt, the capital of the German state Thuringia, MACBETH was one of the first Heavy-Metal bands to arise from the former East Germany. As the heavy-metal tidal wave swept past the Iron Curtain into East Germany, MACBETH found themselves in the right place at the right time. Starting out as a quartet consisting of Tobias "Tobser" Nehmer (vocals), Ralf "Zeidler" Klein (guitars), Hanjo Papst (bass), and Frank Fiebach (drums), the band would add a second guitarist (Michael Werner) to the lineup in the autumn and embarked on a series of live performances.
The communist authorities required any live-performing band to have a government-issued license, and thus the band took a risk playing their first shows without this notorious document. After subsequently obtaining their license, the band replaced Tobias Nehmer with the charasmatic singer Detlev Wittenburg, who became an integral part of the band's increasing success and popularity. A change on bass became necessary after Hanjo Papst was drafted into the army, so Michael Fleischmann joined towards the end of 1985. The band toured like crazy, and soon their growing legion of devoted fans began to arouse the government's suspicions. After being increasingly harrassed and hounded by the authorities, the band needed another change on the bass - Fleischmann had left and was replaced by Carsten Tauchert.
As tensions between the band and the ruling authorities increased during each ensuing concert, it became clear that it was only a matter of time until the situation came to a boil. This occurred in the Fall of 1986 at the legendary Stadtgarten concert in Erfurt. The concert hall was packed full, yet hundreds of fans were still outside trying desperately to get in. Present in the balcony were dozens of Stasi (East German secret police) agents who were covertly observing the raucous events. The crowd in the tightly-packed concert-hall was going completely bezerk during the show, with the intensity threatening to explode out of control any minute, despite the band's repeated efforts to calm the frenzied crowd. However, towards the conclusion of the show the police stormed the backstage area and prohibited the band from performing further, canceling the planned encore. This was the last straw! The fans were furious and not only the concert hall but also the city's streets became filled with angry protests and disturbances caused by the fans on their way home.
In the eyes of the authorities, the band's fate was now sealed, and they mounted a campaign to ensure the forced premature end of the group. The authorities immediately suspended the band's license for an "indefinite" period, and this was just the beginning of the government's retribution. In addition the band's vehicle-license was revoked, and the Chief Burgomaster (known as the "Red Rosi") terminated the use of the band's rehearsal room, threatening the band with a series of evictions and fines. Facing a massive debt burden of 25,000 Marks, it became hard to find optimism during this time. Drummer Frank Fiebach departed to join BLITZZ, bassist Carsten Tauchert tried to leave the country, and guitarist Michael Werner was drafted into the army.
It took until early 1987 to find the right replacements, but the new lineup, rejoined by former bassist Papst who had completed his army service, was ready to continue on, now under the moniker CAIMAN. This lineup was vocalist Detlev Wittenburg, guitarists Ralf "Zeidler" Klein and Lutz "Roger" Rödiger, bassist Hanjo Papst, and drummer Frank Basner. However about twelve months later, Wittenburg was unjustly sentenced to over a year in jail for a completely trifling offense. The group had also replaced Frank Basner with new drummer Rico Sauermann. The band continued on playing as a four-piece, with Ralf taking over the vocals in addition to guitars, and subsequently the band experimented with a new singer, but after a couple months this just didn't work out. As a result, the band came close to breaking up for good, even though due to the changing of the times, the band was able to tour through East Germany relatively unmolested by the government.
In the autumn of 1989 Wittenburg was released from prison and was invited to rejoin the band. Unfortunately in the tumult of the reunification, Papst and Sauermann departed west to seek their fortune. But with support from members of the band Rochus on bass and drums, the band were able to complete their final two gigs, with Detlev Wittenburg sharing the stage with them during their penultimate concert in Erfurt. Tragically it would be his last performance, as in December 1989 he committed suicide by hanging himself in the woods next to Erfurt. The first era of MACBETH ended on this heartbreaking note, as the band dissolved following Wittenburg's untimely death.
In 1993 MACBETH decided to return to the stage, embarking on a tour that commenced with a jam-packed gig in Sondershausen. The tour was a success, and based on the fans' feedback MACBETH decided that the time was right to begin writing brand-new material. However a new calamity would soon strike the band, for drummer Rico Sauermann commited suicide by jumping off a high-rise in Frankfurt am Main. After burying their drummer, the band were to again dissolve.
It would be almost a decade later until anyone would see the band perform live again. In 2002 founding members Ralf "Zeidler"Klein and Hanjo Papst, encouraged by their loyal fans, decided that the time was right for the rebirth of MACBETH. With both old and new songs in their arsenal MACBETH toured extensively, including support slots for In Extremo and The Bones, and they saw that they were able to successfully rekindle the old fire and magic. The current lineup is Oliver "Olli" Hippauf on vocals, Ralf "Zeidler"Klein and Roland Jurack on guitars, Hanjo Papst on bass, and Steffan Jurack on drums. In 2006 the MACBETH debut album finally appeared - until then fans had to content themselves only with old tapes that were heavily copied and traded. Reviews were very positive, with the leading metal magazine Rockhard stating: "The listener is treated on this album to darker, more powerful, more straight-forward Heavy Metal without any pandering to trends whatsoever. MACBETH truly have their own style, sounding completely sincere and honest." Through their German lyrics, at times relating depraved, demonic, or ludicrous tales, they give the listener insight into the depths of the human soul.
Интересная история у данной группы, много раз собирались, но за 20 с лишним лет так ничего и не выпустили. Дебютный диск вышел в 2006 году, добротно сыгран и записан. В 2008 году выпустили демо, которое можно получить при регистрации у них на сайте.
